Eisenwald announces June 26 as the North American release date for FELLWARDEN’s highly anticipated second album, Wreathed In Mourncloud, on CD and vinyl LP formats. The genesis of FELLWARDEN began in 2014: inspired by the rearing landscapes and quiet, understated majesty of the fells of North-Western England, Fen frontman The Watcher embarked on a quest to embody the ambience of the region through soaring, epic black metal. Envisaged from the outset as a studio-only project, FELLWARDEN permits The Watcher to truly push the limits of creative expression, adding layer upon layer to each piece and building vast textures within extreme […]

Album Review: Tombs – Monarchy Of Shadows

TOMBS is for sure one of the most reliable bands in American black metal. I haven’t heard a bad album by them yet, and the latest, Monarchy Of Shadows, stands as one of their best. They are laser focused here, and don’t mess around for a second. It’s a compact album of six songs, but you get plenty of bang for the buck. I like how TOMBS subtly shift the approach on each song, bringing in slightly different influences, but yet the album is a unified whole. The title track starts things off with gloomy synth until hard riffs come […]

CENTINEX stream new track from upcoming album, Death In Pieces

Swedish old-school, death metal veterans CENTINEX premiere first single from their upcoming studio album, Death In Pieces, set to be released on May 29th via Agonia Records. The new track is titled ‘Only Death Remains’, and is available in the form of a lyric video HERE CENTINEX originated in 1990 as a riff-oriented part of the classic Swedish death metal movement and disbanded in 2005 after releasing eight full-length albums. In 2014 they resurfaced, quite surprisingly, and with a refreshed line-up, delivered their celebrated come-back record, Redeeming Filth. The next album was inevitable and didn’t take another decade to assemble. […]

Hear TYRANT’s ‘Beacon The Light’ HERE at Shadow Kingdom’s Bandcamp. Hailing from Pasadena, California, TYRANT formed in 1978 and put out their first demo in ’82. Proud and powerful, theirs was steel […]

Album Review: Trivium – What The Dead Men Say

I don’t know what it was about TRIVIUM’s debut Ember To Inferno that I dug back in ’03, but clearly, it didn’t take long for Heafy and the boys to monkeywrench what was already a barely roadworthy machine, becoming a pastiche of even themselves only two years later, and firing off an album that would’ve killed a less merch-driven band only one year after that with The Crusade. It’s nearly 15 years later now, and the musical climate has changed. TRIVIUM hasn’t, though, and album #9 flails and falters from the start, twee guitar squeal with all the rage of […]

BLAZE OF SORROW reveal new video from forthcoming EISENWALD album

Italian black metal vanguard BLAZE OF SORROW reveal the new video ‘Sonno d’eterno’. The track hails from the band’s highly anticipated sixth album, Absentia, set for North American release on April 24th via Eisenwald. See & hear BLAZE OF SORROW’s new video for ‘Sonno d’eterno’ HERE at Eisenwald’s official YouTube channel. Since 2007, BLAZE OF SORROW have been a veritable institution of Italian black metal, a scene and style too long overlooked. BLAZE OF SORROW both embody and defy the Italian idiom: medieval in its melancholy, nearly “romantic” in the literary sense of the word, but always revealing (and expanding […]

Album Review: Khemmis – Doomed Heavy Metal

KHEMMIS’ 2018 release proved my Third Album Theory on so many levels. At some point, I’ll have it up on this site, but suffice it to say that it wasn’t only my ears which heard something special in the Colorado quartet that – while it might’ve been there before – came shining through within Desolation. It’s really no surprise that the first tune we’d hear from the band after its most blatantly metal album was a song of the stature of ‘Rainbow In The Dark’. What is impressive, however, is that KHEMMIS pulls it off with nary a hitch nor […]
