What do you do when it’s 5am, you’ve been awake around 10 minutes, and you don’t drink coffee? Apparently for me, you slap on some COSMIC PUTREFACTION to see what the day may bring. I’d like to say I’d heard of this Italian death metal outfit prior, but as it’s simply not the case, come along…
Three albums in four years is no easy task, even for a full band. Factor in possible droughts in inspiration and quality of work, and it becomes all the more difficult. Lone gunman G.G. chooses to snatch me from Morpheus’ grip with the angular, disjointed, but somehow entrancing ‘…Through Withered Horizons’, and I can already tell I’m in for a ride. There’s a bit of a jazzy swing section to be found in ‘Sol’s Upheaval Debris’, but when equal parts lurch ‘n’ lash combine to create something legitimate it always brings a smile. ‘Lysergic Sulfuric Waters’ lives up to its name but be assured our G.G. isn’t simply tossing words/lyrics in a woodchipper (ala a good bit of this sort of metal) to see what sounds “esoteric” or “evil”. Some clear thought has gone into what’s on offer with the work, and a love of language / literature ratchets my review up at least .5 in this case.
‘Cradle Wrecked, Curtains Unfurled’ simply does not let up. Relentless, but there’s such a sense of musicality within this entire album that – even with my first listen – I’m looking forward to its next visit to my stereo. In short, what COSMIC PUTREFACTION has done is created a fan in this grey, haggard doom dog with Crepuscular Dirge For The Blessed Ones.
