Album Review: Undeath – Lesions Of A Different Kind

It takes a lot of either courage, confidence, or flat out balls for a new death metal band to release a debut album. Sometimes it’s all of one of the aforementioned, sometimes an equal blend of all three. Nonetheless, when the promo sheet from Prosthetic Records hails your album as “a whole new level [Insert Obligatory “of confidence and powarrr!” Here] of skull crushing intensity, you’d best know what you’re about. I’m also a little concerned that, within a little over 1 ½ years, New York’s UNDEATH has managed to crank out 2 digital demos, a vinyl split, a compilation, […]

AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN: All Fell Silent, Everything Went Quiet Full-Length Out Now And Streaming Via Prosthetic Records

All Fell Silent, Everything Went Quiet, the latest full-length from Dutch atmospheric black metal unit AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN, is out now and streaming via their new label home of Prosthetic Records. A ten-track chronology of the human condition that heaves under the weight of both distortion and emotion, All Fell Silent, Everything Went Quiet seamlessly defies all genre constraints as vivid melody provides a counterpoint to dismal soundscapes and harsh vocals. Embracing an insular approach to their output, the stunning offering was recorded, engineered, mixed, and mastered by the band. The cover art was also created by the […]

Album Review: Paladin – Ascension

The buzz has been strong on this Atlanta band in the last few weeks, and they seem to be the latest darlings of the “true metal” crowd. I find Ascension entertaining enough, but I really have an issue with calling this an ode to ‘80s style power metal. That description leads me to expect something that draws a lot of influence from the likes of OMEN, MANILLA ROAD and the like. PALADIN to me sounds like they’re the second coming of 3 INCHES OF BLOOD mixed with the shredding guitar frenzy of DRAGONFORCE. The songs are fast, leaning to thrash, […]

Album Review: Wormwitch – Heaven That Dwells Within

This is my first encounter with WORMWITCH. The band belongs to a kind of subgenre where gloom reigns and black metal is just one flavor in an overall tasting. It resembles the approach of another band I recently encountered, FROSTHELM. But there is an extra layering of melody and mood here that surpasses what FROSTHELM was able to achieve. This is a pretty sophisticated sound with a number of subtle layers. All the songs here are quite involved and have a root in black metal. Changes in riff and tempo are frequent but there are some catchy hooks that make […]

ALBUM REVIEW: HORNDAL – Remains

Long live HORNDAL! Their debut album, Remains, brings sludgy, punchy hardcore that almost had me put my fist through a wall just to let out some energy. Remains tells the true horror story of the devil’s destruction of their hometown of Horndal in the 1970s. That story is an interesting read, and I encourage you to read it while listening through this album. The album opens with the single they have been promoting, ‘Wasteland’, and really sets up the rest of the album. This is an anthem to fight for your life, a true call to arms, and I cannot […]
