Noroth / Grave Infestation – Split

When Washington State deathmongers NOROTH and GRAVE INFESTATION of British Columbia get together, there’s gonna be mayhem. NOROTH begins with ‘Trepanation Ritual’, positively spewing bile and fueled with an d-beat urgency, The Cult Is Alive DARKTHRONE, but more meaty, more burled, more gnarly and destructive; memorable in the way getting smacked in the cranium with a ball peen hammer is memorable. Instantly overpowering, GRAVE INFESTATION wields riff and convulsing rhythm with an uncompromising dexterity within the ‘Necroslaughterhouse’, sheep-bleating (bleeding?) leads and time changes aplenty, daring us to latch onto a time signature for more than 10 seconds, knowing we’ll fail […]

LORD OF PLAGUE: Ukrainian Death Metal Duo Releases Passage To None EP On Carbonized Records

Ukrainian death metal duo LORD OF PLAGUE has released their debut EP, Passage To None, on Carbonized Records. LORD OF PLAGUE was initially forged in 2016 by guitarist/vocalist Vlad A and drummer Andrii Zagovora, two longtime comrades in metal united under their passion for OSDM. Named in honor of Morbid Angel’s classic ‘Lord Of All Fevers & Plague’ and influenced by the likes of Monstrosity, early Deicide, Cenotaph, and The Chasm, the two composed several tracks of sonic savagery before putting things on hold for a time. Fueled by an enduring appetite for heaviness and a penchant for the macabre, […]

Album Review: Noroth – Sacrificial Solace

Seattle’s NOROTH returns for it’s third attempt at sonic obliteration after the solid “enough” It Dwells Among Us of 2021 and the following year’s even more weighty Harbinger. After a brief intro, ‘Black Serpent’ begins with all the subtlety of a cage match with a six-legged goat on bath salts who also happens to think you fucked his girlfriend. It’s that level, yes; a bit of HELLHAMMER groove to the riff in spaces, but always head down, always onward. ‘Symphony Of Decay’ is more straight-ahead death metal in execution but loses none of its energy or enjoyability for its simplicity. […]

Album Review: Moribund Dawn – Dark Mysteries Of Time & Eternity

From the get go, I nodded my head and I was pleased. From start to finish I was taken back in time to my youth, first discovering black metal and being shown EMPEROR’s In The Nightside Eclipse. Now don’t get me wrong, its nice to hear new BM and to see the twists and turns of the genre, but O what a pleasure it is to be taken back to the good ol’ days. As an album, Dark Mysteries Of Time & Eternity flows really well. The addition of acoustic and organ does wonders, and even the clean vocals are […]

Album Review: Funeral Chant – Dawn Of Annihilation

Nary an intro or elongated buildup found on Dawn Of Annihilation, for none are needed! ‘Terrorspawn’ screams from the speakers guitars like so many mistles streaking across the sky, underpinned by the artillery of bass and drum, Voidbringer’s Angelripper/Araya-born commands barked sharp and undeniable across the field of battle. This is the sort of black/death hybrid upon which I thrive, and is needed after a day of work, perfect for a mental purge. Mind, not that all is Neanderthalic here, ‘Oneiric Perversion’ shot through with blatantly intricate passages, managing not to lose a blood drop of brutality in the process. […]

Album Review: Steel Bearing Hand – Slay In Hell

The last 25 years of metal never happened as far as Texas’ STEEL BEARING HAND is concerned, and that’s alright by me. These Lone Star Lunatics have constructed a love letter to the death and thrash metal of the late ’80s and early ’90s on Slay In Hell, steadfastly ignoring any “progression” since those days. By focusing on what they know and love, they’ve pretty much whipped the ass of any banger who lays ears on this. The album is just six tracks and pretty brief, but packs a lot into its length. The best thing about Slay In Hell […]

MEPHITIC GRAVE: Hungarian Death Bringers To Release Into The Atrium Of Inhuman Morbidity Debut May 7th Via Carbonized Records; New Track Streaming + Preorders Available

Stream / Share MEPHITIC GRAVE’s ‘Chthonicon’ HERE Hungarian death bringers MEPHITIC GRAVE will unleash their Into The Atrium Of Inhuman Morbidity debut via Carbonized Records this May. Made of jagged riffs and grisly vocal incantations, MEPHITIC GRAVE’s sonic venom — influenced by Abhorrence, Funebre, and Autopsy among others — runs deep discharging eight maniacally putrid odes of lo-fi grimness. Tipping their scythes to the works of H.P. Lovecraft, the band’s visual and lyrical concepts revolve around the philosophy of cosmicism which denies the presence of a god or any such ideas of divinity and upholds that humans are insignificant in […]

Album Review: Mortiferum / Hyperdontia – Split 7″

I use the phrase “short, sharp shock” a fair amount. I try not to, but I’ll admit to it popping up more than I’d like. Besides, it doesn’t really fit this release. Two bands, two songs. Get in, get rabid, get out. Back in the day, those Maxell or TDK 60-90 minute cassettes we’d get in the mail from writing addresses in the back of metal magazines to trade bands and hear music were treasure troves. Yeah, of course there were some clunkers, but more often than not, you’d come away with at least a handful of new (to you) […]

FUNERAL LEECH: Death Meditation Full-Length From New York City Death/Doom Practitioners Sees Limited CD Release Via Carbonized And Dawnbreed Records

Death Meditation, the crushing debut from New York City-based death/doom practitioners FUNERAL LEECH, is available for the first time on CD format via Carbonized Records. Initially released on LP and digitally earlier this year, Death Meditation spews forty-five punishing minutes of death/doom darkness mired in contemplation of our mortal fragility; a true volatile display of pure sonic sickness. Recorded and mixed at Chapel Black Studios in Brooklyn, New York by Travis Bacon (White Widows Pact, Black Anvil, Hogwasche) and mastered by Arthur Rizk (Power Trip, Tomb Mold), through the fetid resonance of Death Meditation, FUNERAL LEECH believes that death is […]
