THOMAS VON WACHENFELDT’s Mythos Of The Forefathers – an ambient dark-folk work in two volumes – is a heartfelt homage to Fädernas gudasaga, a book by Swedish 19th-century scholar and author Viktor Rydberg.
Mythos Of The Forefathers was created to complement the text in each of the book’s chapters. To capture its overall mood, Thomas combined conventional compositions which adhere to form and structure with unorthodox music that evokes an archaic atmosphere. Drawing from older Nordic folk scales, he utilised traditional instruments like lyre, flutes, drums, and string instruments, while also incorporating various synthesisers to instil a sense of metaphysical wonder.
THOMAS VON WACHENFELDT commented:
“Given the considerable time and artistic dedication that I invested in capturing the essence of Viktor Rydberg’s book, it’s exciting to see this double album finally being given the authentic release treatment. Until now, it has remained confined to the digital realm, devoid of any promotional efforts.”
THOMAS VON WACHENFELDT ‘s 2010 album Malleus Clericum – Hinslåtar, näckvalser och häxdanser (‘The Clergy Hammer – Devil-songs, sprite-waltzes, and witch-dances’) is a solo violin masterpiece consisting of 25 tracks rooted in traditional Swedish folk music and lore.
This album is primarily a listening experience – a flight of the imagination – rather than for dancing. Despite the lone instrument, the compositions are versatile enough and the playing is so spellbinding that it never grows tedious. From the sinister energy of ‘Djävulspolskan’ (‘The Devil’s Polska’) to the more melancholic interpretations of ‘Näcklåtar’, which are tunes associated with the mythical water spirit Näcken. Many of these pieces were originally known as ‘bravurlåtar’ (bravura tunes), a term specific to the Swedish musical tradition for songs that showcase not only the fiddler’s virtuosity but also his connection to the spirit world.
