Brittany-based post-metal architects STONEBIRDS announce the release of their fourth and final album, Perpetual Wasteland, on October 10th through Ripple Music, and present the haunting debut single, ‘Croak’.

For over a decade, STONEBIRDS have thrived on duality: the eternal tension between opposing forces, with melancholy as their guiding equilibrium. Now, with their fourth and final album, Perpetual Wasteland, the Breton trio distills their essence one last time: light against darkness, crushing weight against fragile levity, and a newfound undercurrent of renewal amidst the void.
Recorded at Studio La Briche with producer Cyrille Gachet (Fange, Year Of No Light), the album marks a seismic shift in sound: incisive, extroverted, and meticulously layered, yet sharper than ever. Here, the band’s sludge-drenched doom collides with soaring post-metal grandeur, crafting an epitaph that is as nuanced as it is uncompromising.
Thematically, Perpetual Wasteland is a visceral meditation on collapse and transcendence. Drawing from haunting imagery of ecological decay, human isolation, and the elusive promise of deliverance, STONEBIRDS weave desperation into something strangely luminous. The riffs are tectonic, the melodies achingly sparse, each note a frayed thread in a tapestry of ruin. Yet within the chaos, there’s revelation: a fleeting brilliance, like light through cracked earth. This is the end, but not without fire.

STONEBIRDS is a French trio formed in 2008 and hailing from Central Brittany—a land that has never ceased to fuel their songwriting and distinctive sound. Abandoned villages, forgotten inhabitants, landscapes left behind by the modern economy, ghostly places haunted by ancient legends and contemporary rural decay, oppressive dampness, storm-lit horizons… These images feed an anguished and tormented doom metal, giving birth to their 2015 debut album, Into The Fog…And The Filthy Air.
The record carved its own path between sludge, psychedelic and prog rock and post-metal — a direction further solidified with 2017’s sophomore effort, Time. More radical and dynamic, the album contrasted crushing metal riffs with luminous arpeggios, all drenched in poisonous reverb. Drawing inspiration from the luminous heaviness of Yob and Cult Of Luna, the Breton trio won over sludge and doom audiences, sharing stages with the likes of Ufomammut, Mars Red Sky, Glowsun, and Alunah, while storming festivals such as Hellfest and Motocultor.
Their 2020 album, Collapse And Fail, was hailed their “darkest and fiercest work to date” by critics. Across forty minutes of razor-edged sludge and post-metal, the trio propelled their craftsmanship to stratospheric heights, weaving a complex, masterfully brutal, yet at times ethereal tapestry, all the while echoing mankind’s bleak fate. Since then, STONEBIRDS have continued to evolve, channeling the raw spirit of their homeland into music that is as haunting as it is hypnotic. With new material on the horizon, the band remains a vital force in the underground, forging ahead with the same unflinching intensity that has defined their journey thus far.
