After the four song Pornographic Stench demo of 2019, SANGUISUGABOGG got snapped up double-quick by Century Media, parlaying the “weirdness” of their name and logo (self-described as “the Nike swoosh of death metal” by gurgler Devin Swank) into what seems to be the next “it” band in metal.

‘Black Market Vasectomy’ kicks things off, or tries to, at least. I shouldn’t enjoy Cody Davidson’s coffee can drums, but for some reason I am, but that could be because they’re mixed so far to the front that the guitars sound like they’re in a room down the hall somewhere, likely jerking off to pics of the band’s logo. Built around a chugging riff, ‘Face Ripped Off’ has its moments, all but the drums dropping off at times, leaving Swank to spew in an utterly nondescript way. Remember the death metal band you went to see last weekend where 3 of the 5 members were wearing SIX FEET UNDER or DYING FETUS shirts? He sounds like that guy.

‘Pissed’ makes me want to go for one just to keep up the interest, while the 1:31 of ‘Hungry For Your Insides’ is pure MORTICIAN worship, only without the gravestone grin so prevalent in the works of Messrs. Rahmer and Beaujard. There are a few bright spots in ‘A Lesson In Savagery’, churning and made-for-windmilling riffs, and the ever-present artillery of Davidson, pounding away on those Folgers cans and oil drums he surely found in a Solid Waste Authority landfill near Columbus.

Ambling by without eliciting so much as a raised eyebrow or perked up ear, ‘Proclamation Of The Frail’ leads us into either itself again or ‘Necrosexual Deviant’, because it’s hard to tell anything apart anymore, and the affection I felt for the drums is gone, as they. Simply. Do. Not. Vary. Man’s actually talented, no doubt about it, but one almost gets the sense that, sans logo, band name and Davidson, this band wouldn’t have a ‘BOGG to shit in. If the logo is the “Nike swoosh of death metal”, Homicidal Ecstasy is the stench-ridden and falling apart pair of Kanye West Nike Air Yeezys you saw at the Salvation Army. Equally as corporate, and not worth trying on.
