Album Review: EXP – EXP

When you see the names COP SHOOT COP and LUBRICATED GOAT in a “current/former members of” PR blurb – to say nothing of the legend-making SWANS – there’s a certain level of gritty beauty and off-kilter quality that’s expected, nay, demanded. And that demand goes both ways, as those three bands have built careers on challenging their listeners, both stylistically and lyrically over decades. Now crawls from the gutter EXP with its self-titled debut, and woe be to the unprepared. Opening with the bombed-out groove of ‘Havoc On The Astral’, the sound is more reined in than those familiar with […]

Album Review: Nine Pound Hammer – Too Outlaw For Outlaw Country [MLP]

NINE POUND HAMMER swung its first swing four decades ago as BLACK SHEEP, and – aside from a brief stint when guitarist Blaine Cartwright and vocalist Scott Luallen were abducted by Van Aliens from the galaxy of Hillbillicus TNT in order that they might bring their snotnosed, beer drankin’, Hellraisin’ country/punk hybrid to the sextraterrestrial masses – have been at it ever since. Too Outlaw For Outlaw Country continues the spread the gospel of giddyup, the title track already kicking on its way out of the chute, so best we just try to hang on for the ride and not […]

Album Review: Palmar De Troya – III [EP]

Spain’s PALMAR DE TROYA returns with its third EP, the aptly titled III, and I’ll just bet you’re wondering what their first two EPs were called too, huh? Anyhow, let’s get to it, bruddas and sistas. ‘The Method’ revs its engines early, no-wave and snarling, LYDIA LUNCH’s ‘80s output blended with an almost THE LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH post-punk ethic, guitars slicing ‘n’ dicing. Follows ‘She, The Destroyer’, coarse and uneven, but the band seems to be stepping out of the shadows of their influences here, certainly an outgrowth of time spent on the road in the past year […]

Album Review: Bright Sunshine – Executive Power Supreme

After shaking up the power structure of the Southwestern service area for the past few fiscal years, regional representatives of the corporate headhunting group BRIGHT SUNSHINE have entered into a partnership with Reptilian Records in hopes to boost brand recognition and expand upon an already lean and mean business acumen with Executive Power Supreme. Alright, time to gather ‘round…everyone, take your seats. Linda? Linda? No, Linda won’t be hosting this meeting due to the Sign-Up Sheet Fiasco of ’22. Focus on the positive here, as we open with ‘Growth Opportunities’, a calamitous ride down a gravel road, slamming into guardrail […]

Album Review: The Stabbing Jabs – The Stabbing Jabs

Ah, Cincinnati…Porkopolis herself, home of Skyline Chili, the confluence of the Licking and Ohio rivers. And now home to, for better or worse, THE STABBING JABS. ‘Broken Brain’ hits with the fury of BLACK FLAG’s ‘My War’ but done up in a grime-fueled rock and roll incarnation, and I’m not sure how many seconds the guitarist spent getting that tone, but it’s just drenched in motor oil, and continues through the even more punch-drunk ‘Bad Slime’. Memories of my time in Detroit at Corktown Taven come to mind, five local kickass bands for $10 in a 2nd floor shoebox just […]
