Album Review: Ahab – The Coral Tombs

After an 8 year layoff, AHAB rises again from the briny deep, this time to celebrate Jules Verne’s undersea classic 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. AHAB has always been a unique band, practicing what they call “nautik doom”. Their slow motion mix of crushing heaviness and melancholy melody really does seem oceanic. It seems calm and languorous even in the heavy moments and reminds you of one of the ocean’s leviathans gliding majestically through black and gloomy waters. Album Review: Strigoi – Viscera

Arising from the ashes of VALLENFYRE, STRIGOI are trying to establish more of their own sound on Viscera, their second album. The best word for that sound would be “gloomy”. The album still retains brutality, but things are more claustrophobic here, with a bigger emphasis on doom and Gothic atmosphere. That does give STRIGOI more of its own sound for sure, but they are not as immediate as the ferocious VALLENFYRE. This New York black metal crew pop up every few years with a new album, which gets talked about for a month or two and then promptly forgotten until the next cycle begins. Here they’ve dished up a metallic poutine of NWOBHM, JUDAS PRIEST and early speed metal influences that get the blood pumping. A pretty bland cover on this one and the font for the band name is about as basic as it gets. But fortunately what’s within pulses with plenty of energy, as VENOM INC. continue to put out strong releases as if they are on a mission.
